The Shenk’s White Minnow was created by Ed Shenk, a Pennsylvania fly-fishing legend known for his innovative streamer patterns. Shenk developed this simple yet versatile baitfish imitation to imitate species like creek chubs and minnows, making it effective for trout, steelhead, panfish, and even striped bass. While Ed Shenk is credited as the original designer, the fly has been popularized and adapted by other fly tiers. For example, Tim Flagler has demonstrated tying variations of the Shenk’s White Minnow in multiple videos, including those for Orvis News. Flagler’s approach often incorporates baby-blanket yarn for the body, a material introduced to fly tying by fellow tier John Collins, which makes the fly extremely shapable and easy to color. I was introduced to this pattern in the mid-1990s by Smallmouth guru Harry Murray of Edinburg, VA. It was responsible for my first large SM (4# +) from the North Fork of the Shenandoah River.

Tying Process

Although the original pattern was tied with white rabbit fur in a dubbing loop, many alternatives have emerged. The flies above were tied with zonked white rabbit.
